FACS Score Checker
The FACS Score Checker is a computer program for entering FACS scores into a data format.
The Checker program is included on the FACS CD ROM. Checker is a Java® program and requires installation of a Java runtime,
also included on the CD ROM and available
elsewhere on the Web. Updates to Checker can be downloaded from this page (see below).
The Checker program was written to conform to the new (2002) FACS Manual.
Documentation for installing and running Checker can be found in the Investigator's Guide on the CD ROM and in the program's help files.
Although many applications can be used to enter FACS scores as
data, only Checker analyzes each score entered to determine that it is a valid FACS score.
Checker looks at all the FACS rules to determine that the score is correct when the scorer tries to enter the score.
If the score does not conform to the rules, an error message appears. No invalid FACS score can be inserted into a Checker data file.
Checker also formats the score entered so that the AUs appear in a sorted order,
with all upper case prefixes and suffixes in a plus-format string.
The scores are stored in a special binary format as serialized Java objects,
which is efficient and compact but unreadable by text editors.
These files have the extension .jso (Java serialized objects) by default.
The most important function of Checker is comparing a student coder's practice test scores to the criterion scores of experts.
There are many practice items in the FACS Manual that are essential for learners to score
and to compare with the scores of others as they progress through their training.
Checker is an easy method for making this comparison.
Checker is also required for taking the FACS Final Test.
In the original version (1.0) of Checker, only basic functions, such as checking scores and data file creation and retrieval,
were implemented.
Subsequently, new functions were added, which are listed by version below.
Version 1.1:
- import and export of comma-delimited text datafiles
- comparisons among multiple student FACS coders
- functions for scoring the FACS Final Test
Download the Latest Version of Checker
The latest version of FACS Score Checker is free to perchasers of FACS on CD ROM.
You must logon to DataFace to download Checker.
Checker is not appropriate for use with the original version of FACS, even using its revised (1992) rules,
because of new AU numbering and other details.
